About Us

The first Catholic community in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal (erstwhile Natal) was founded in 1852 in the city of Pietermaritzburg, the capital and second-largest city in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Pietermaritzburg had just been founded fourteen years before in 1838. St Mary’s Parish is the mother Parish in the Archdiocese of Durban. It was in St Mary’s Parish where Bishop Allard OMI and his band of Missionaries had established themselves and from where they launched the Church throughout South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia (then South West Africa).

The first church building was in Jabu Ndlovu Street (then Loop Street) and is still standing today.  At the turn of the century, it was decided to build a new church, which is now a Parish Hall on Langalibalele Street (then Longmarket Street). In 1930, the new and beautiful St Mary’s was built.
